CONVERTERS
XML Sitemap Validator
Check sitemap XML structure, URL entries, location formatting, and duplicate URLs — without uploading the document.
LOCAL XML CHECK
Check a sitemap file or paste XML
Paste a URL set or sitemap index. XML must be well-formed; escape reserved characters in text and attribute values.
Maximum file size: 5 MiB. Gzip-compressed files are not decompressed by this checker.

No structural errors found. This result does not confirm that listed pages or child sitemaps are reachable or indexable.

How to validate an XML sitemap
Paste sitemap XML or select an XML file, then choose Check sitemap. Review the entry count and any errors or duplicate-location warnings, correct the source document, and check it again before publishing.
What the checker examines
- XML well-formedness and the sitemap root element and namespace.
- URL-set and sitemap-index entry structure, including one non-empty
<loc>value per entry. - Absolute HTTP or HTTPS locations, basic URL-escaping errors, the 2,048-character limit, and exact duplicate locations.
- Mixed hosts in URL sets and the 50,000-entry-per-file limit used by the Sitemap protocol.
Google Search Central specifies fully qualified absolute URLs and limits an individual sitemap to 50,000 URLs or 50 MB uncompressed.[1] This browser tool checks the URL count and absolute location format, but its separate 5 MiB local input cap is lower to avoid slow parsing.
The Sitemap protocol requires UTF-8 and entity-escaped data values; a <loc> value must be shorter than 2,048 characters.[5] When editing XML, escape characters such as & as &.
All URLs in a URL set must share a single host, and URLs must be URL-escaped.[5] This checker reports mixed hosts in URL sets and catches unescaped whitespace, control or non-ASCII characters, and malformed percent-escapes; it is a basic screen, not a complete URI-conformance check. A sitemap index’s child URLs cannot be compared with the index file URL because that URL is not included in the XML.[5]
What a clean result does not prove
This is a client-side structure check, not a live site crawler. It does not fetch target URLs or confirm indexing; it also does not request child sitemaps, test HTTP responses, compare canonical tags, inspect robots directives, or submit the sitemap to a search engine. A well-formed sitemap can still contain URLs that redirect, fail, or should not be indexed.
Frequently asked questions
Does this checker fetch each page listed in the sitemap?
No. It checks the XML structure and location format only. It does not request the listed pages or check their HTTP status, canonical URL, robots directives, or index status.
Can I check a sitemap index?
Yes. The checker recognises both URL sets and sitemap indexes and validates the index entry locations. It cannot compare child sitemap hosts with the index file URL because that address is not included in the XML.
Why is the browser checker limited to 5 MiB?
The 5 MiB limit is a browser-processing safeguard, not the published Sitemap protocol limit. Use a smaller sitemap file or split the input if checking a larger document would make your browser sluggish.
