Economy balancing guide

Game economies quietly inflate: players earn a little more than they spend, and six months later prices feel pointless. This balancer tracks your currency faucets (sources) against your sinks — repairs, taxes, auction fees — and shows the daily surplus that drives inflation.

Faucets and sinks

A faucet adds currency to the game: quest rewards, monster drops, daily login bonuses. A sink removes it: repairs, taxes, crafting fees, auctions. If faucets outpace sinks, currency accumulates and prices must keep rising to stay meaningful — the classic MMO inflation spiral.

Reading the ratio

The source/sink ratio is your pressure gauge. A ratio near 1.0–1.1 means the economy holds steady. Above 1.2, players accumulate fast — add sinks or cut faucets. Below 1.0, currency drains and players feel poor; loosen up.

Remember that new players start with nothing and veterans have stockpiles. A single global ratio is a starting point — the real model tracks per-player over time.

Tip: Add a big late-game sink (prestige upgrade, cosmetic sink, crafting station) to absorb the surplus from veteran players — the richest segment of your economy.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good sink/source ratio?

Start near 1.0–1.1 (sources slightly above sinks). Watch whether players feel wealthy or broke in playtests, then adjust by 10–20% per week.

How do I fix inflation in a live game?

Add sinks first (repairs, taxes, new upgrade paths), then trim the biggest faucets. Announce changes clearly — players notice economy patches.

Do I need an auction house as a sink?

Auction houses move currency between players (a transfer, not a sink) unless you take a cut. The cut is the sink — set it so the house drains enough.
