TTK & DPS guide

DPS tells you how much damage a weapon deals per second on paper; TTK (time-to-kill) tells you how it actually feels in a fight. This calculator gives you both — plus shots-to-kill, headshot breakpoints, and sustained DPS with reloads — so you can compare weapons the way players experience them.

DPS vs TTK

DPS is damage × fire rate. TTK is how long until the target dies: (shotsToKill − 1) ÷ fireRate, because the first shot lands instantly. Two weapons can have identical DPS and very different TTK — a slow heavy hitter kills in fewer shots, which matters when the target is moving or shooting back.

Sustained DPS is the honest number

Magazine size and reload time change everything. Sustained DPS = damage × magSize ÷ (magSize ÷ fireRate + reloadTime). A weapon with great burst DPS but a tiny magazine and long reload will lose sustained fights. Balance for sustained, tune for burst feel.

Tip: Balance by TTK at the range the weapon is meant to fight at, not by DPS. A sniper rifle should lose close-range DPS comparisons but win at range — TTK at intended range is the design target.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good TTK?

Competitive shooters typically sit at 0.3–0.9s TTK. Battle royales are slower (1–2s) to give time to react. Co-op games can go higher. Pick based on how reactive you want fights to be.

How do I account for accuracy?

Multiply damage by your expected hit rate (e.g. 0.5 for 50% accuracy) in the damage field, or compare effective DPS = DPS × accuracy across weapons.

What is the difference between burst and sustained DPS?

Burst DPS ignores reloads — the damage while the magazine lasts. Sustained DPS spreads damage over the full cycle including reload, which is what matters for longer fights.
